Estate Cleanout Checklist

Clearing out a loved one's home is one of the hardest cleanouts there is — physically demanding and emotionally heavy, often on a tight timeline set by a sale or the courts. This checklist walks through an estate cleanout step by step so nothing important gets thrown out and the process stays manageable. Before you start

• Confirm your authority. Make sure you are the executor or have the family's agreement to clear the home. If the estate is in probate, check that you are cleared to remove and dispose of belongings.
• Secure important documents first. Before anything is boxed or hauled, locate the will, deed, titles, insurance policies, tax records, financial statements, and any safe-deposit keys.
• Set a realistic timeline. Estate cleanouts almost always take longer than expected. If there is a closing date, work backward and build in buffer.
• Bring supplies. Boxes, contractor bags, markers, tape, and gloves. Label four zones: Keep, Sell/Donate, Recycle, and Trash.

Kitchen

Check inside cabinets, drawers, and the backs of shelves. People tuck cash, jewelry, and keepsakes into kitchen containers. Sort dishes and small appliances for donation; toss expired food and worn cookware.

Bedrooms

Living areas & office

• Collectibles — coins, stamps, firearms, tools, and antiques — that deserve appraisal before donation.
• Photos, letters, and family records that are irreplaceable even if not valuable.
