The short answer

Yes — both Lowe's and Home Depot will remove your old appliance, but generally only when they are delivering a replacement you bought from them, usually for a haul-away or recycling fee, and typically on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. If you are not buying a new appliance from them, or you have an extra old unit sitting in the garage, their programs will not help — that is where a junk-removal call comes in.

Lowe's haul-away

• How it works: When Lowe's delivers a new appliance, they can take the old one of the same type away. Meridian has a Lowe's at 100 15th Place South, plus a location on Highway 19 North.
• Fee: A haul-away/recycling fee typically applies (commonly around $30), though it may be waived for certain Pro members. Confirm the exact fee at checkout — pricing and promotions change.
• One-for-one: They remove one old appliance matching the new one delivered. Buy one fridge, they take one fridge.

• How it works: Home Depot removes an old appliance when delivering a replacement. Terms and any fee are presented during the purchase.
• Fee: A haul-away fee commonly applies (reports range from roughly $25 to $50 per appliance, and some deliveries include it); confirm at checkout for your order.
• One-for-one: Like Lowe's, removal is generally matched to the type of appliance being delivered.
• You prep it: Disconnect and empty the old appliance before delivery unless you purchased installation/hookup.

Both retailers say they recycle the metals from hauled appliances, recovering steel, copper, aluminum, and plastic.

Where the retailer programs fall short

These programs are convenient when they fit, but they leave gaps:

• No new purchase, no haul-away. If you just want a dead appliance gone and are not buying a replacement, they will not come.
• Only one, only matching. They will not take the extra deep freezer in the garage or a second old unit — just the one that matches your delivery.

What about Best Buy for appliances?

Best Buy is a common name for electronics recycling, and it does sell and deliver large appliances with haul-away much like Lowe's and Home Depot — again, tied to delivering a replacement, for a fee, and one-for-one. But Best Buy's free in-store recycling program is aimed at electronics, not big appliances; you generally cannot drop a refrigerator or washer at the store the way you can a small gadget. So if you are buying an appliance from Best Buy, ask about their delivery haul-away option, but do not expect to haul an old washer to the store yourself. The nearest Best Buy may also be a drive from Meridian, so weigh the trip against a local pickup.

Tips to make retailer haul-away go smoothly

• Confirm haul-away when you order, not at the door. It is easy to assume it is included and be surprised on delivery day.
• Clear the path. The delivery crew needs a route to the old appliance and out to the truck.
• Disconnect and empty ahead of time — unhook water lines, defrost freezers, and pull out food and loose shelves — unless you paid for installation.
• Know it's one-for-one. They take the single matching unit, so plan another route for any extras.
• Ask what happens if there's a problem — a crew that cannot safely move the old unit may leave it, and then you are back to needing a hauler.
